------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Biographical Sketch Dr. Vinata Lokeshwar is a tenured Associate Professor of Urology and Cell Biology and Anatomy, at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Florida. Dr. Lokeshwar received a master's degree in Microbiology from Pune University, Pune, India and a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from Saint Louis University, Saint Louis, Missouri. During her graduate studies, she received the National Research Service Award. Dr. Lokeshwar came to the University of Miami School of Medicine for postdoctoral training in Cell and Molecular Biology. During her postdoctoral training she received fellowship grants from the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association. Dr. Lokeshwar joined the Department of Urology faculty in late 1994 and has been working on designing methods to improve bladder cancer detection, prognostic markers prostate cancer and on markers that detect disease severity in interstitial cystits. The specific focus of Dr. Lokeshwar's laboratory is on understanding the functions extracellular matrix components and their-degrading enzymes in urologic diseases, and their use as diagnostic/prognostic markers and as treatment targets in urologic cancers and interstitial cystitis. The current research projects in Dr. Lokeshwar's laboratory are primarily funded by grants from the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health, National Institutes of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases/National Institutes of Health and the US Army/Department of Defense. She was a recipient of the Stanley Glaser Award for Biomedical Research and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine's Junior Faculty Research Award. She is a member of the Graduate Faculty in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy and is involved in training Ph.D. students, as well as, training urology residents and fellows in urology-related research. Dr. Lokeshwar holds a US patent on "Methods for Detection and Evaluation of Bladder Cancer". She is serving as the chair of the Tumor Marker panel in Bladder Cancer Consensus Panels/Société Internationale d'Urologie.
