Before Arriving to Campus
Note that the following information is oriented towards our PhD in Biomedical Students. If you are entering another program on the medical campus, you should contact them directly for assistance.
University Email Account
Once you have accepted our offer of admission, your email account will be requested. You can log into your email via email.miami.edu using your CaneID (the same as CaneLink) with the same password.
This email account is where you will receive all official university communications from our office and others. You are responsible for checking your email daily both before you arrive to campus and as a student.
The UMIT Service Desk can help you set your email up on your phone, laptop, etc. You can obtain assistance at 305 284 6565 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Confirm your Personal Information
Log into CaneLink and update the following information:
- Permanent Address (International students MUST maintain this address in their home country)
- Local Address
- Mobile Phone Number
- Emergancy Contact Information
Be sure to keep this information up-to-date when you arrive to campus or subsequently make changes.
All new students are required to provide proof of immunization against measles, mumps and rubella, and tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. All new students must also provide proof of immunization against hepatitis B and meningococcal meningitis or sign a waiver declining these immunizations. All PhD students on the medical campus must be screened for tuberculosis prior to arrival or they will need to report to employee health upon arrival.
An immunization form must be completed and immunization information must be entered at mystudenthealth.miami.edu and the completed immunization form must be uploaded to mystudenthealth.miami.edu prior to arrival on campus. Students should also consider immunization against varicella (chicken pox).
Note that even though your insurance may be partially or fully covered, you must still register for insurance annually. Please visit our student health page for additional information and links.
Registration and Student Fees
All students in the Biomedical Sciences are registered by the Office of Graduate Studies in advance of the start of the semester. New students will receive notification by email of their class schedule. PhD students in the biomedical sciences are responsible for the payment of ALL fees and account charges beyond tuition. It is to your benefit to pay these as soon as possible. Late fees and account holds are placed on student accounts in default.
Students who have a third party, government sponsor or scholarship should contact OGS for additional requirements.
Office of Disability Services
All students seeking official accommodations for a documented disability should request auxilary aids prior to June 1st. The complete process is outlined at umarc.miami.edu. You can contact the Office of Disability Services at 305 284 2374 or email@example.com.

All graduate students are expected to be familiar with and abide by the academic policies and requirements of the University of Miami. Be sure to read all the information in the Academic Policies section prior to arriving on campus.
Join our BGSG Facebook Group
Our Biomedical Graduate Student Government hosts a Facebook Group that is closed to just members of our PhD programs. Here you can post and ask questions of current students, share information, search for roommates, etc. Make sure to JOIN.
If you are new to South Florida, one of the first things on your mind will be finding a place to live. We have provided a resource called Living in Miami. It is a great place to start to learn more about our city including Housing Information, where to shop, things to do and more.
