 Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is important not only as an end result of effector system responses to foreign pathogens (as illustrated on the left), but also for elimination of excess T-cells following their activation and expansion. Research in this area includes studies on the mechanism and regulation of apoptosis, signals that activate effector systems, and mechanisms of cytotoxicity.
