Location

The University of Miami

The University of Miami is a private, nondenominational, coeducational institution with more than 2,100 full-time faculty members. As the largest research university in the southeast, extraordinary opportunities abound for research training.

The Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine has firmly established itself among the best academic medical centers in the United States. With more than $175 million in annual funding for nearly 1,200 research projects, the School of Medicine offers exciting and challenging opportunities for rigorous training in biomedical science.

A research powerhouse, the University of Miami has achieved international recognition for breakthroughs and advanced knowledge in diabetes, cancer, spinal cord injury, AIDS, marine science, and many other areas. Our centers of excellence are continually ranked among the nation's best, including Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and the Diabetes Research Institute. The research here continues to impact people world-wide and to improve and enrich the quality of life.

Located just minutes from downtown Miami, our campuses are vibrant, exciting places of learning, research and collegial spirit. Here our students balance the hard work of rigorous academics with the unique experience of living in a city with true international flavor.

Facilities

With two newly constructed modern research facilities and plans for more on the way, you have at your disposal all the tools needed for cutting edge research. Faculty laboratories are well equipped for state-of-the-art research and additional shared facilities include those for DNA and peptide synthesis, protein sequencing and amino acid analysis, DNA microarrays, proteomics, monoclonal antibody screening and production, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, transgenics and computers for the analysis of protein structure. The medical library receives more than 1,800 periodicals, mostly available as full-text online, and holds more than 200,000 volumes; additional resources are available in other University libraries.

The City of Miami

Miami is a rapidly growing, multiethnic, cosmopolitan community. It offers a wide variety of films, concerts, opera, ballet, and theatrical performances, and several fine museums. The area is a sports mecca, home to professional teams from the NFL, NBA, and NHL and has national-caliber college teams in football and baseball.

Because of the city's subtropical location, the climate is mild year round. Nearby parks, ocean beaches, tropical gardens, and wildlife sanctuaries offer abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Florida Keys, coral reefs for snorkeling and diving, and the Everglades and Biscayne National Parks are all within an hour's drive of Miami. An additional benefit of the subtropical climate is that numerous scientific symposia and medical society meetings are held in the area.
