PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The MD/PhD Program, built around the biomedical doctoral programs at the Miami campus of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, provides a unique training environment for exceptional individuals who intend to pursue careers in academic medicine and research.

This program is designed so it can be completed in as few as seven years, but additional time may be required for dissertation research. Graduate research training at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine aims to provide a rigorous foundation in modern biomedical science and develop critical thinking abilities. Various seminars, meetings, and clinical case reviews organized specifically for the combined degree student provide opportunities to integrate the perspectives of clinic and laboratory.

The curriculum consists of the school's outstanding clinical training, a rigorous research doctoral program, MD/PhD program activities, and informal seminars. The first two years consist of the medical school core basic science modules, a study of integrated organ systems, problem-based learning, and the Clinical Skills Program. During the first two years there are also meetings designed to facilitate contact with potential faculty mentors and learn about PhD programs, and students carry out research rotations. This is followed by approximately four years of research training to complete the PhD degree, one year of required clinical rotations and one year of clinical and/or research electives.
