BACTERIAL PATHOGENESIS, GENETICS AND PARASITOLOGY

Malaria is caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum; while Yersinia pestis, the bacterium behind the Black Death in the Middle Ages, is still responsible for outbreaks of disease thorughout the world. To battle these and other potentially life-threatening microorganisms, research efforts have focused on detecting infection, developing combative drugs, and achieving an understanding of drug resistance and the pathogenesis of microbial disease.
