The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) is housed in its own modern, newly-built research building, the Gautier Building. The Gautier building is a part of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. The medical complex is near downtown Miami and is linked to the Coral Gables campus by the Metrorail system. The University of Miami School of Medicine was established in 1952 and has undergone unparalleled growth as a major center for academic learning and scientific research. The UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center ranks among the top 25 U.S. medical schools in research funding. The Medical Center also includes several allied research institutions: The William L. McKnight Vision Research Institute of Bascom-Palmer, the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, the Parkinson Research Institute, the Diabetes Research Institute, the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Research Center, the Mailman Child Development Center, and the VA Medical Center, making the School of Medicine one of the country's premier research and medical institutions.
