Summer Research Fellowships of Neuroscience Majors
For Neuroscience majors who are interested in working in a research laboratory
during the summer there are several Lois Pope Summer Research Fellowships available
(see below). To apply for these fellowships you need to find a neuroscience
faculty member willing to mentor you in his/her laboratory, have the mentor
write a letter of endorsement on your behalf, and you will need to fill out
the application by the deadline specified. These fellowships are awarded on
a competitive basis, and they are an excellent opportunity to become engaged
in cutting edge science in one of the 68 neuroscience laboratories at UM. If
you have questions regarding the fellowships, contact Dr. McCabe or Dr. Noriega
for assistance.
Lois Pope Undergraduate Neuroscience Summer Research Fellowships
A generous endowment made to the University of Miami by our Trustee, Lois Pope, will allow undergraduate majors in neuroscience to participate in summer neuroscience research projects at the University of Miami. Applications for the summer of 2007 will be available in the Neuroscience Advising Office (Flipse 508) beginning in January 2007.
Each student researcher chosen will be given a $2,500 stipend plus support for
a “single” dormitory room in the summer. Awardees will be expected
to spend at least 10 weeks in the summer doing full-time research and to make
a Research Day poster presentation on their results the following spring semester.
Thus, awardees should have at least two more semesters in residence at the University
before graduation. No other award or University support is allowed during the
summer, but students may participate in the group PRIME program as PRIME associates,
or may be invited to attend special activities related to other summer research
programs, such as the Dean’s Minority and Women Research Program and the
Honors Research Program.
To apply for the award, students should submit the following by March 30, 2007:
1. A statement of purpose, indicating the reason for wishing to do research, and for your choice of research subject.
2. A letter of endorsement from a research mentor, indicating that she/he is willing to direct your research. Students should contact potential mentors directly to discuss the feasibility of summer research in their labs. A list of possible mentors, with contact information, may be found on the web at:
http://chroma.med.miami.edu/neuro/people.htm
3. A brief, preliminary research plan (2-3 pages), developed with the advice of your selected mentor.
4. A resume, including an ACE, or other copy of course work and grades completed as an undergraduate student. Any previous research experience should be described.
5. A letter of recommendation sent directly from a faculty member at the University.
The application materials described above may be submitted to the Review Committee by placing them in Dr. McCabe’s mailbox located on the 5th floor of the Flipse Building; by sending them via campus mail to Dr. Philip McCabe, Dept. of Psychology, Coral Gables Campus, Loc. Code 0751; or by mailing them to Dr. Philip McCabe, Dept. of Psychology, Univ. of Miami, Coral Gables, FL 33124-0751. March 30, 2007 is the deadline for submission of all materials.
Preference will be given to those planning biomedical research focused on the nervous system.
