Dr. Omaida C. Velazquez Named Chair of Department of Surgery

Omaida C. Velazquez, M.D., professor of surgery, radiology, and biochemistry and molecular biology, and David Kimmelman Endowed Chair in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, has been named Chair of the DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, after a thorough search that reviewed the most talented leaders in the surgical field in the U.S.

Welcome our President Julio Frenk

When the University of Miami’s newest ’Canes begin arriving on the Coral Gables campus in just a few days, it will mark the first time in 14 years that an incoming freshman class will be welcomed by a new president.
Julio Frenk, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., the Harvard dean and physician introduced in April as the successor to Donna E. Shalala, takes the reins as the University’s sixth president on August 16, inaugurating an era that undoubtedly has the entire UM community buzzing.

Drs. Helen M. Bramlett and W. Dalton Dietrich Receive $2 million NIH Research Grant

Helen M. Bramlett, Ph.D., professor of neurosurgery and psychology, and W. Dalton Dietrich, Ph.D., Scientific Director of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, Senior Associate Dean for Discovery Science, and professor of neurological surgery, neurology and cell biology, have been awarded a five-year $2 million grant by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Miller School Medical Students Collaborate with Provincial Minister of Health in Dominican Republic

Through the support of the non-profit organization Medical Students in Action (MSA), University of Miami Miller School of Medicine M.D. and M.D./M.P.H. students met with the Dominican Republic’s Provincial Director of Health, Manuel Antonio Hilario Acevedo, M.D., in San Cristobal on July 10 to collaborate on the development of a community health worker program.
