Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program 2017
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (UM MSoM) is a research powerhouse, achieving international recognition for breakthroughs and advanced knowledge in diabetes, cancer, spinal cord injury, AIDS, marine science, and many other areas. The Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (OGPS) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program offers students from underrepresented backgrounds the opportunity to participate in research for ten weeks during the summer months. The SURF Program offers participants the opportunity to choose from eight Academic Program areas of research in the Biomedical Sciences, including Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cancer Biology, Cellular Physiology and Molecular Biophysics, Human Genetics and Genomics, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology, Molecular Cell and Development Biology, and Neuroscience.
SURF fellows spend ten weeks pursuing research projects in the laboratories of UM MSoM faculty. The program introduces fellows to the type of projects encountered during doctoral research training and lead to an understanding of the planning, discipline, and teamwork involved in the pursuit of basic answers to current questions in the biological sciences. In addition to laboratory experience, SURFers participate in seminars, workshops, and cultural enrichment activities, co-sponsored by the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC), the Chemistry/Biochemistry Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, and the Neurotrauma program funded by an NIH R25 grant. – The aim of this collaboration is to increase the number of participants at seminars and workshops held by UM MSoM faculty and to minimize duplication. Seminars and workshop topics range from Scientific Ethics and Misconduct to Multidisciplinary Research Careers in Industry.
The Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies SURF program, in collaboration with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC), and the Chemistry/Biochemistry Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, is able to offer sixteen participants the opportunity to take advantage of this one of a kind program. The participants are selected from an extraordinary number of nationwide, very competitive, pool of applicants. All SURFers receive a competitive stipend, metro-rail pass, access to the wellness center on the Gables campus, housing, and a travel voucher for those traveling from outside South Florida.
